Haunting portrait of a vanishing world: Photographer captures desperate decline of 1970s Leeds as the old way of life slowly died

These haunting images form part of a set taken by Peter Mitchell, a lorry driver originally from Catford, south London, who took the photos as he journeyed around Yorkshire.

At the junction of Wortley Road, which to the right crossed the Leeds - Bradford railway line within a hundred yards, went past the Picturedrome cinema and joined Armley Town Street at the junction of Ridge Road. With brick terraces ajoining the ' Commercial Hotel ' the 18 tram gets under way on the long cross city journey to the Cross Gates terminus. Photo. A K Terry.

Leeds was the first town corporation in the country to use electric tramcars powered from overhead wires, and by 1902 a network of tramways covered the city with both horse and steam traction eliminated. Buses began to take over on the shorter internal routes, the Whitehall Rd tramway being the first to close in 1922.
