Take photos of pupils on a white background. Print them out and then they can draw themselves into a background eg. woodland.

Isolate sections of a photo/artwork on photoshop, drop in a carefully chosen background colour then draw in what is missing using a fine liner. Look at Patrick Caulfield for a similar aesthetic.

the DEPTH created in this drawing is all with shading and using different tones of the pencil. The low lights and highlights all make it look like its coming off the page.
