François Boucher 'Portrait of a Lady' formerly titled 'The Marquise de Pompadour' 1760-70

Traditionally this was identified as Boucher's great patron Madame de Pompadour and thought possibly to have been designed as a present for her brother. This is no longer accepted, though the sitter was certainly a lady of influence. This late work is said to be less a precise record of a specific set of facial features than a rendering of the ideal of femininity that dominated the Rococo style. Though if this is the case I do not see why it could not been an idealized portrait of Pompadour…
