Hallway lighting ideas
Substantial prismatic bulkhead lights salvaged from a mothballed factory in the North East of England. Sensitively restored, they retain the original linear prismatic glass lens set within an imposing two-part lacquered cast steel enclosure. Suitable for mounting on the wall or ceiling.
Katy Orme from Apartment Apothecary: "The vintage Czech opaline light I chose from skinflint is perfect for the hallway as due the shape and quality of the glass it emits a very even, soft light with no shadows. Not only does the light itself look amazing and create a wonderful focal point in the hallway but it makes the space feel so much more welcoming and cosy. We have used a Smart LED bulb that I can control on my phone and change the tone and brightness of the light, which is ideal."
Like all rooms in the home, hallways benefit from the use of a variety of different light sources. This enables you to select one or several feature lights to lend depth and texture to your scheme, as your budget permits. Should you have sufficient space, a central vintage ceiling pendant light looks fantastic combined with wall lights and a table lamp positioned near the front door. This will create a welcoming glow throughout the darker months.
In a home where the staircase descends into your hallway you will see your light both from above and below. In this instance, consider opting for a design with an interesting gallery. Vintage opaline glass lights with copper or brass tops are particularly suited for this purpose as the metal provides a subtle accent of colour from above. Cut glass designs also work well - as interiors journalist Jess Hurrell has done with our 1970s Czechoslovakian pendant with brass detailing below.
A hallway design featuring a green ceiling contrasted with white walls. The dark painted ceiling makes a bold impact in a small hallway. The green ceiling visually alters the proportions of the space, making a tall narrow hallway feel less lofty. A glass globe pendant light in white creates a clean contrast with the stripe. #darkceiling #paintedceiling #greenceiling #darkceilingwhitewalls #darkceilinglightwalls #globependant #globelights #globependant #greeninterior
A painted ceiling in dark green, contrasted with fresh white walls. The coloured ceiling visually reduces the height of the space to give a narrow, tall hallway better proportions.
