Poland-born fashion designer Barbara Hulanicki opened Biba in 1964 in Abingdon Road, Kensington, London, moving to Church Street, Kensington in 1965, and Kensington High Street in 1968. With lavish décor and decadent atmosphere inspired by Art Nouveau and Art Deco style, and with an important catalogue mail order arm to the business, Biba rapidly became Britain's go-to place for affordable, comfortable mini-skirts, feather boas, felt hats, velvet trouser suits, and unisex T-shirts.
