SALVAGE OF WOODEN WALLS. 8 JULY 1948, THE HULK OF HMS CORNWALL, 72 GUN SHIP OF THE LINE, BUILT AT THE END OF THE NAPOLEONIC WARS, WAS MOVED FROM THE THAMES, NEAR GRAVESEND AND BEACHED OFF GRAYS. SHE HAS RESTED IN THE MUD SINCE SHE WAS SUNK BY A NEAR MISS BOMB IN 1940. THE PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITIES REMOVED HUNDREDS OF TONS OF MUD FROM HER HOLDS, LIFTED HER OFF THE BOTTOM BY MEANS OF CAMEL, AND TOWED HER TO GRAYS FOR SALVAGE.

Of course, Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory survives and is safely berthed at Portsmouth Naval Base – but perhaps the panelling was taken from another grand ship…
