If you study this picture of urchins in Victorian London closely, you will see several boys have swollen cheeks. A sign of mumps, or much more likely bribes in the form of gobstoppers to sit still while the long photographic process took place.
These stunning black and white pictures show the history of young children playing sports on the streets of London. Without the technology of today, these images dating back to the 1920s show young friends entertaining themselves with a simple pair of dice or a ball and piece of chalk to mark out a set of goalposts. One of the earliest pictures, taken in December 1920 in Shadwell, shows two boys boxing barefoot in the street watched by a crowd of their friends.
