London in the 1920's-street knife grinder

A common sight during the 1920's, the knife grinders gradually disappeared from the streets of London, but were still to be seen in the 1950's and early 60's. The contraption this man has obviously hand built is amazing - the two higher wheels turned a small grindstone by pedalling. And some effort has gone into the wooden framework, which has ornamental carving. It must have been difficult to make a decent living in the mid-1920's and things were soon to get even worse, with the slump and…

J Lyons 'Oxford' Corner House - Oxford Street/Tottenham Court Road, London - facade, 1932

Of the many Lyons Corner House possibly the flagship for many years was the 'Oxford' Corner House situated adjacent tot he junction of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road in London. This magnificent building has, sadly, been gutted and the complete loss of the shop facades and interior must be one of the missed opportunities of London. To think back to the awful sterile interior of what was Virgin Records...no wonder it closed!
