Bristol at War - St Peter's Church

The burnt out remains of St Peter's Church, Castle Park. The church of St Peter was gutted following enemy action in 1940 when central Bristol was blitzed. The whole of this blitzed area was transformed into Castle Park. The picture below shows a view of the park from across the river at St Philip's Bridge. Besides St Peter, the tower of St Mary Le Port (at left, just inside the park), All Saints' cupola and the spire of Christ Church with St Ewen are visible. In 2008 a memorial…

Bristol at War - Castle Park

Unusual old postcard showing what looks like a boy scout troop around a fire. Showing the war damage to all the historic buildings. (undated but must be wartime or just after). On the afternoon of 24 November 1940, 148 aircraft of the Luftwaffe left airfields in Northern France destined for Bristol. The concentration point was to be the City Docks, and their objective was to destroy Bristol's industry and port facilities. 135 aircraft reached the target area, and dropped 156,250 kg…

Bristol at War 1940 - Bristol Centre

Looking towards the City Centre from College Green before the air raids on Bristol. By the autumn of 1940 Britain had been at war for a year. Along with most other everyday commodities, petrol was strictly rationed · though who would think it, judging by the stream of traffic in College Green on this sunny day? Bristol, with the rest of the country, was preparing for air raids. With the street lighting gone for the duration of the war and headlights of all vehicles shaded, driving in the…
