We are here on the cusp of one of those periodic reversals in the level of women's hemlines. There was bound to be a reaction against the miniskirt sooner or later, and it came in 1970. The young woman right of centre in the "maxi" coat is the very acme of fashion, whereas her miniskirted counterpart, seated left, is a little passé. The maxi was all the rage for a year or two, but the mini has proved more enduring. Nowadays there doesn't seem to be so much of a prevailing "look" and styles…

View Larger Map In this magnificent view of the same area by Card House (probably taken from the roof of the Alexandra Hotel) you can see the Plough Inn (now part of the O'Briens chain) and an early cinema. It is interesting to see from the Google Streetview that the pub now has a mock-tudor exterior.
