"The laws of classical thermodynamics essentially describe how one equilibrium replaces another. They say very little about the changes that happen in between when systems are not in equilibrium. I that respect alone classical thermodynamics is quite inadequate to deal with living systems where things are happening all the time" #therainbowandtheworm #quote #bookoftheday #biology #thermodynamics

"I promise neither easy nor definitive answers. Our education already suffers from a surfeit of facile simplistic answers which serve to explain away the phenomena and hence dreaded the imagination and dull the intellect. An example is the claim that natural selection of random mutations is necessary and sufficient to account for the evolution of life. As a result while generations of evolutionary biologists are lulled into thinking that any and every characteristic of organisms is to be…

"Until quite recently the typical way to study living organisms is to kill and fix them or smash them up into pieces until nothing is left of the organisation we are supposed to be studying. That has merely enforced the Newtonian mechanical view of organisms that has proven thoroughly inadequate to account for life." #bookoftheday #book #therainbowandtheworm #biology

Completed the Singing Neanderthals by Steven Mithen All in all this is a very interesting and enjoyable book. The core thesis that hominids likely evolved a capacity for musical communication before having a constructive spoken language is very well articulated and justifiedalmost to the extent that it seems so obvious once you've been shown it. Some of the other secondary ideas proposed in this book are a little far fetched however Mithen is very measured and honest in how he presents…

"There is unlikely ever to have been a population of humans - modern Neanderthal or otherwise - for whom the creation of a social identity to override that of the individual was more important. For that music is likely to have been essential. This is the case for modern humans: when living on conditions of adversity they make music. Such music enables intense social bonding and facilitates mutual support. I have no doubt that the Neanderthals behaved in exactly the same way"…

"The neurobiologist Walter Freeman is an equally strong proponent of music-making's role as a means of social bonding and he brings to this his knowledge of brain chemistry. He has suggested that during group music making the hormone oxytocin may be released into the basal forebrain and that by loosening the synaptic connections in which prior knowledge is held this 'clears the path for the acquisition of new understanding through behavioural actions that are shared with others'. Freeman…
