Led by Black and Latin LGBTQ+ subculture, ballroom was the NYC underground’s response to laws banning cross-dressing and the mainstream rejection of queer and trans identities. Ballroom has influenced culture, fashion and language for decades. As drag and LGBTQ+ nightlife takes over the mainstream, ballroom has always been at its origins—from voguing to throwing shade and “Yas, queen!”
