two men in medieval clothing, one holding a bow
Landsknechts, by Paul Doistein, c.1500. Carrying what are perhaps the banners of Dolstein's fahnlein, two ensigns strut out escorted by halbardiers. Of particular interest are the 'shorts' of the first two figures, the lower hose laced to the upper and the curious loops of lace on three of their hats (a field sign perhaps?). Note the upper and lower sleeves held in place with laces reminiscent of late 15th-century Italian fashion. (Thur. Hauptstaatsarchiv, Weimar)
