Domestic objects and our personal possessions are an important part of how we construct our identities and how we relate to the outside world. We forge strong and intimate links to particular objects through psychological and emotional processes. This begins in early infancy and is reinforced throughout life by our relationships and interactions with those objects and the ability of those objects to absorb traces of people and places, acting as vessels for memory and emotion.
