Best viewed 'Original' size. LMS (built Derby, 1933) rebuilt "Patriot" 7P 4-6-0 45534 "E Tootal Broadhurst" starts its southbound express from Crewe - 13/06/1962. A Llandudno Junction (6G) locomotive at the time this picture was made, 45534 moved to Crewe North (5A) shed in June 1963 and was withdrawn from there the following May, after a little over 31 years in service. © picture courtesy of Peter Brumby.

During its final days of service, Stanier Class 8F 2-8-0 No. 48652 at its home shed of Bolton on 16th June 1968. New as LMS No. 8652 from Eastleigh Works during November 1943, it was withdrawn before the month was out.

LNER Gresley 61'6" "RB" (Vestibuled Buffet) No.W9135E (ex-LNER No.650) built at York 1937, Diagram 167, Order No.761, in (somewhat inconguously) BR Rail Blue & Grey livery. Used on the Cambridge Buffet Expresses and not withdrawn until 1977, such was the quality of Gresley coaches and bogies. This was the last wooden-bodied passenger vehicle in service on BR. At Paddington on a Swansea (High St.) Auguast Bank Holiday relief, 08/76. I caught this train (to Neath) and spent the entire journey…
